Freddy’s back to haunt your nightmares, kiddies. The Hollywood Reporter writes that a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie is in the works, with Paramount Pictures having earned the rights to the franchise in order to bring the world of the horror classic to a modern audience.
The new film will be the first under the studio’s new label, Paramount Primal, which will “partner with up-and-coming storytellers as well as established filmmakers to produce smartly budgeted films across a variety of genres, including horror, comedy, action, and grounded science fiction.” (Read: low-budget filmmaking!) This initiative is led by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, who produced Zach Cregger’s breakout film Barbarian.
No details about this new version of Elm Street have been revealed, though THR writes that it will be “set in the world of A Nightmare on Elm Street, based on the original screenplay.” So, a remake without calling it a remake, from what we can gather — and the second for the beloved slasher franchise, which was also remade in 2010 to little success.

The new film is produced by original director Wes Craven’s widow Iya Labunka and his son Jonathan Craven, both of whom help run the Craven estate, which is licensing the original screenplay to Paramount.
“We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans,” said Labunka to THR. “We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theatre – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds.”
“We can’t remember a time before we were fans of Wes Craven,” said Lifshitz and Margules. “The fact that Iya and Jonathan have entrusted us with this opportunity to help usher a new story into this world is an honor beyond words. We look forward to working alongside them to bring a terrifying new nightmare to audiences everywhere, and to welcome Freddy home.”
